Top Five Albums of the Year (So Far)

I originally wrote this list for Broken Amp, so to find a more in-depth edition, please visit the site. Who knows? You might love what you see there!

From worst to best, here’s my top five albums of the year so far, with links to each of my reviews for them all.

5: Below – Upon a Pale Horse

A great mixture of Iron Maiden and classic doom sounds. Below’s latest is epic, heavy and comes highly recommended.

4: Duel – Witchbanger

Coming at you from the 1970s is Duel’s Witchbanger. Along with having one of the best album names of time, the album is a great throwback to when heavy metal was slow, groovy and dark.

3: Loathe – The Cold Sun

The new kids on the block, Loathe are a vastly exciting band. The Cold Sun is smart, heavy and catchy. Big things are coming from this band based on their debut record.

2: Beastmaker – Inside the Skull

Turns out that horror-imbued doom is scarily good. Inside the Skull is a spectacular doom record that any fans of the genre would enjoy.

1: Sepultura – Machine Messiah

Sepultura’s latest is bold, stupidly heavy and hugely powerful. It’s a very exciting record for a band that has been around for over 30 years. There’s still life in the old dog yet. Vibrant, eager life.
